Gold Flying Thick & Fast for Ignition Integrators
Once again, iControls would like to congratulate a high achiever in the Ignition community: Jacob Mills from I2R! As the Authorised Distributor of Ignition software within Australia, iControls is committed to working with, supporting and helping to grow knowledge and expertise about Ignition.
I2R Group is a specialist automation and process control business. First established to serve the food and beverage processing industry, I2R has since branched out to apply the precision and reliability required in the factory space to offer world class solutions within the irrigation control market.
Along the way I2R has grown to a staff of over 30 running a switchboard and control room manufacturing facility alongside a full team of computer programmers, software & electrical engineers, project managers and electricians.
One of those staff is Jacob Mills, a 19-year-old Automation Technician. This young man is another great example of a bright, motivated individual who has gone the extra mile to achieve Gold Certification from Inductive Automation’s Inductive University.
With Jacob achieving Gold Certification, I2R is even more assured that they can offer their clients an in-depth knowledge of Ignition. This is incredibly valuable, as his newly (gold)-minted skills include advanced architectures, tag historian and compression, redundancy, SQL databases, troubleshooting error messages, and more. The tests for Gold Certification through the Inductive University generally take about 8 hours to complete, so it’s a considerable investment of time and effort.
Once you are Gold Certified, staying current is easy. Any time a major version of Ignition is released, you just need to cover the newest challenges in Inductive University and take the special upgrade version of your current certification test level.
We have an extract from a quick Q&A session with Jacob about his achievement:
Q: How long have you been working with ignition?
A: About 10 months now, when I first started with the company in July. I don’t know if this is too relevant, but I can actually remember the exact date, Monday 13 July 2020.
Q: What do you like about the Ignition platform?
A: How you can customise just about any sort of property or attribute using the binding tools, which makes it really versatile, as opposed to some other HMI/SCADA platforms where you’re a bit limited as to exactly what you can manipulate and customise.
Also, how well it integrates with scripting tools (Python, SQL, the internal expressions functionality) to further extend the potential of what you can achieve with the platform.
The scripting with Python and SQL is also nice because it directly integrates with previous learning and experience in past years.
Q: What did you learn through the training program?
A: I learnt the intricacies of each of the components of the Ignition, e.g., Perspective, Vision, named queries, trending and how the components all work with each other and have a role in building one big comprehensive system.
In particular, from the tests, I learned that it’s crucial to pay very close attention to the details that are put in the prompts, or you may miss certain minor details in what they’re asking you (requiring you to fix your submission for the test). So definitely attention to detail.
Q: What type of projects have you worked on with I2R?
A: I have contributed to projects for monitoring systems and interfaces for a unique range of customers, mainly in the food & beverage industry, e.g., JBS, Voyager Malt.
Once again, congratulations to Jacob and I2R, and we look forward to continuing to support you on your Ignition journey – hopefully to Premier!
